History of Crowlands Hall

On 25th June 1952 at a Public Meeting it was decided to raise funds for a New Hall. When built in 1958 it was the first time in 108 years that Crowlands had a real public hall.

The old building that was used for that purpose until 1954 (condemned by Public Health Authorities) was originally the Episcopalian and Presbyterian School Building constructed in 1862. This building was built by the citizens of Crowlands at the time and had a variety of uses such as school, church services for three denominations, post office and hall.

Construction of the New Hall was achieved by fundraising by the Community with Subscription Lists/ Donations, Wool Drive, and the efforts of the Crowlands Ladies Progress Auxiliary. They raised a total of £2900 and received a Government grant for £1500.

At the Grand Opening on Friday 27th June 1958, Mr Turnbull (Hon. Minister for Lands) declared the Hall open said “ …he was pleased to see so many young boys and girls present. In another 60 or 70 years time when, perhaps, another hall was to be opened, they would recollect this night. The fittings and construction were really first class. The hall had obviously been built to last and would be great benefit to future generations.”

At the Grand Opening they had a Ball. Music was supplied by Wal Baker’s dance band. A Star of the Evening was chosen… Miss Dawn Simpson, of Paradise. She was presented with a sash and trophy. The original ‘Star of the Evening’ will be present at the 50th Anniversary of the Crowlands Hall celebration.
